Introduction

Welcome to our blog post about the health effects of 830nm red light therapy. You may know that we've been publishing articles about wavelengths in the past - the 808/810nm health effects cheatsheet is an example thereof.

What this blog post does is summarizes all the available studies on this specific topic. In total, I've included a little under 600 studies for 830nm light. 830nm light is frequently included in many current red light therapy panels - a topic I'll return to later.

During this process, I've divided all studies into 1) human; 2) animal: 3) in vitro (literally means "in the glass") studies. Many people know that these human studies carry the most weight in medicine. Therefore, whenever human studies are available, I've prioritized their outcome. So, if five animal studies and two human studies are available on one health benefit, I've prioritized the outcomes on the human studies.

There are big philosophical differences between scientists on how they rate animal-based research. I love this research and will draw implications from it for humans but I'm also aware that many people think only human research should count and that we shouldn't base human implications on animal research.

I do warn against taking this information at face value though. These cheatsheets I've created are a tool to make exploring what effects each wavelength has much easier. However, you still have to think for yourself. The categorization I've made in selecting studies that are either "positive", "neutral", or "negative" directly comes from the amazing Excel sheet that Vladimir Heiskanen has created.

Vladimir's Excel Sheet contains 7,000 red light therapy studies. And by going through all these studies myself and categorizing them on different tissues and goals made exploring this topic much easier. But, if you really want to know why a study is positive, neutral, or negative, and what the context of that judgment is, you'll have click on the reference and actually read the study.

825-835nm Human Evidence Outcomes

Strong Evidence For Health Benefits: 3+ Human Studies With 65%+ Positive Outcomes

  • Herpes Zoster skin infection, which is often known as shingles
  • Skin rejuvenation in dermatology.
  • Different joint benefits, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Recovery after sports injuries - this one speaks for itself.
  • Central and peripheral nerve problems near the brain, including Bell's Palsy and the inferior Aveolar nerve.
  • Oral mucositis, which is inflammation in the mouth that's a frequent side effect of cancer treatment.
  • Oral health benefits, such as pain from orthodontics and jaw dysfunction (TMD).
  • Many different types of pain, including back pain, heel pain, neck pain, and pain at multiple sites across the body.
  • Allergic Rhinitis, which is inflammation of the nose and is closely linked to hay fever.
  • Hypothyroidism of the thyroid.
  • Diabetic foot ulcer wound healing.

Some Evidence: 1-2 Human Studies Either 100% Positive Or 50-50% Positive/Neutral

  • The some evidence category includes 68 different benefits that are too extensive to list here. If we'd had more positive studies on the benefits in this category using ~830nm light (and thus more confirmation of an effect) they would move to the "strong evidence" category above.

Insufficient Or Neutral Or Conflicting Evidence - Therefore Not To Be Included In The Other Human Categories

  • In this category, you'll find 31 different benefits too extensive to summarize. In these cases, the evidence is either contradictory or insufficient research is done. And sometimes there's simply no effect to be found.

Strong Evidence For Health Harm: 3+ Human Studies With 65%+ Negative Outcomes

  • No health outcomes are placed in this category for now, which is excellent news! So far, no downsides have been found for using 830nm in humans, assuming you use normal dosing parameters.

825-835nm Animal Study Evidence Outcomes

Strong Animal Study Evidence: 3+ Animal Studies Available And 65%+ Positive:

  • Bone health benefits in many different areas. These areas include bone repair, the gene expression of bones, and benefits for osteoporosis.
  • Epilepsy - speaks for itself but promising for people suffering from this! Hopefully human research follows...
  • Hearing loss
  • Arthritis - as also confirmed in human studies.
  • Muscle benefits, such as for exercise and muscle injuries.
  • The facial nerve of the brain.
  • Pain, specifically for alterations in nociception and analgesia (pain-killing).
  • Skin flaps in relation to surgery.
  • Wound healing, such as after burns or excisions during surgery.

Insufficient Or Neutral Or Conflicting Animal-Based Evidence:

  • 70 different outcomes are included in this category. In most cases, there are not sufficient studies carried out on these topics.

Below you'll find all the animal studies with 830nm light. Of course, any positive outcome in animals still need to be confirmed in humans. Often, such confirmations are found, although sometimes positive or negative animal research doesn't translate into the same outcomes in humans.

Animal-Based Evidence For Health Harm: 3+ Studies With 65% Or More Negative Outcomes

Fortunately, no studies found here. That result is a bit odd though as you'd at least expect some clear negative outcomes when there are hundreds of studies available. I'm discussing this topic in my later advanced comment section.

825-835nm In Vitro Studies (Mostly The 830nm Wavelength)

In vitro means "in the glass" in Latin - these are studies carried out in a laboratory setting, like the way you would in biology or chemistry class. These studies try to manipulate biological tissue in such a setting, and don't necessarily use a living animal or human.

So, the strength of the evidence of in vitro studies is generally considered low. However, depending on your viewpoint of medical science, you may still think that these studies are very valuable (as I do myself).

Advanced Comments On The Outcome Of These 830nm Wavelength Studies

In this section, I'll talk about the scientific and philosophical assumptions and background of my work, as well as some imperfections. Not everybody should read this section but be my guest if you're interested in this topic. Here we go:
I'd love to get your feedback to improve this resource. So comment below if you have any questions or comments.
Some overlap does seem to exist between the 808/810nm wavelengths, the 830nm wavelengths, and this 850nm wavelength. But there are differences too. I'll have to compare them in more detail to observe whether they really all have the same effects. Some companies like Joovv claim that 810nm, 830nm, and 850nm light all have exactly the same biological effects. I'm not sure whether you can conclude that though.
There may be publication bias in the animal and in vitro research. I didn't find any negative studies in either category, which is suspect. The same thing happened in my 808/810nm blog, which is weird. It may also be that Heiskanen categorizes studies as "neutral" if there's no effect or a slightly negative effect. Or, the results with LLLT/red light therapy may simply be extremely positive and never really cause any harm, which would be amazing.
You'll still have to think for yourself when using this resource. As stated before, I haven't gone through all the studies in detail as I relied on Vladimir Heiskanen's excellent work. So, instead of assuming my judgment is correct, it's better to read the studies yourself for a more nuanced and correct perspective and only then drawing conclusions.
The 65% positive and 65% negative cutoff points aren't set in stone. I do think they're reasonable though.
I know the topic is highly complex and wish I could simplify the research even further. If you have low-hanging fruit suggestions that are not time-consuming then I'm all ears. We're trying to present the best available evidence as easy to possible to all red light therapy users and consumers.
Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) in human research and regular studies weren't separated. I'm very well aware that there's a difference between case studies and cross sectional studies and cohort studies on the one hand, and RCTs on the other hand. In a perfect world, I'd spend even more time on subdividing all the human research. Still, Alex Fergus' resources aren't endless and this project is probably already taking too many hours so I had to make strategic decisions. I did note whether a study is a human RCT or another type of human research study (then named "human"). So you can click the studies yourself and read the research on all of the outcomes yourself and draw your own conclusions.

There's a lot more to say here, potentially. But, the points I've made above should convey most of the philosophy of science considerations regarding my approach in this 830nm blog.

Best 830nm Wavelength Panels

Next up, let's consider the best 830nm wavelength panels. Please remember that I'm only considering whether a panel emits a lot of 830nm light here, not other qualities.

You'll have to do your own research on the power output of these panels, or which one has the best control panel, or the shipping and import taxes to your country, and so forth.

But, without further ado, here are the 830nm panels with the highest percentage of light emitted at that wavelength. I've added many of the reviews for that specific purposes as well, so you can look at more specifics regarding the panel:

Depending on where you live, the MitoPRO (worldwide), Rojo (NZ and AUS specifically), and Infraredi (worldwide) are the best option to get a big chunk of 830nm light here.

Of course, what the best panel is here depends largely on what's important to you too. If you find a good control panel important, then you might need to go for the PlatinumLED BioMax. If you think pulsing is important, opt for the Infraredi Flex.

And so forth. So I'd always check the YouTube reviews by Alex listed above. But, the panels above are great options if you care about maximizing 830nm alone!

Conclusion: The 830nm Wavelength Science Is Promising!

As you may know by now, the science on 830nm light is very promising. Human research with multiple studies show benefits for skin rejuvenation and conditions, joint health, injury recovery with sports, nerve problems, oral health benefits, lowering pain, allergic rhinitis in the nose, and hypothyroidism.

There's some overlap of the 830nm wavelength with 810nm and 850nm but differences exist too. Soon, I will do a comparison between these to explain the similarities and differences in more detail.
