A very exciting 2026 mask study is just out. With a surprising treatment protocol.

Lower Wrinkles By Up To 27%, Plus Better Skin Texture, Density, Moisture, And Elasticity
This study came out in December 2025. I'm curious that I didn't come across it before, as it showcases direct pictures of mask results that people have had.
If you're curious about that topic, Alex recently did an article/video on it, with the before/after results in scientific studies you can see here:

And yes there you've got quite some evidence showcasing that LED masks work. So here's another study on the topic!
Check the before/after below, for instance:

(That's a progressive decrease in wrinkles, over a 12-week period)
And, yeah, apparently near-infrared is used here. Which is quite unique as most studies use red light for instance. I've covered a lot of these mask studies here:

Next up, here's a difference in skin texture after 12 weeks:

(Skin moisture and density are also visible in the full paper - the pictures are just poorly displayed on this blog here, so I refer to Figure 5 and 6 in that paper)
Then, another unique thing about this study is the mask that was used. You can see the NIR-based mask, that apparently also targets the scalp, below:

Power output was a horribly low 0.81 mW/cm2. We've criticized this before, as some masks are underpowered, including the one used in this study - Alex covered this in great detail here:

But back to the study. The study isn't really clear, as the text implies NIR only is used, but then the schematics showing the light output at different wavelengths shows this:

Nevertheless, the researchers almost cannot be correct about the dosing, as it's displayed very chaotically and doesn't fully make sense:
"The nNIR LED device, designed as a facial mask with an optical power of 0.81 mW/cm2, was applied to the face. The broader spectrum of the nNIR is illustrated alongside the spectrum profiles of various LEDs in Fig 2. Skin irradiation was administered five times weekly for 30 minutes, resulting in a cumulative dose of 87 J/cm2 over a 12-week period. "
If I run 0.81 mW/cm2 for 30 minutes per day, I get a total dose of 1.2 J/cm2 per day (rounded number), and just under 6 J/cm2 per week, which should be 72 J/cm2 over a 12-week period.
Normally, that's about 12 times less than what we recommend for skin beauty. But, the dose does seem to work, with almost no light output (assuming the researchers' numbers are correct, as they're not internally consistent even!).
The outcome was quite promising though. Here are the numbers supplied by the researchers:
"A cohort of 20 participants (mean age 51.45 ± 4.12 years) was included. The treatment demonstrated significant improvements across various skin parameters: total wrinkle count reduced by 24.62% and 27.22% after 4 and 8 weeks, respectively, with a continued 26.48% decrease observed 12 weeks post-treatment. Additionally, skin texture exhibited a reduction in maximum roughness values by 5.13% after 12 weeks. Furthermore, significant enhancements were observed in skin elasticity, with an 8.66% increase noted 12 weeks post-treatment, alongside a noteworthy increase in skin moisture levels by 6.74%. Skin density also showed improvement, with a significant 3.60% increase after 12 weeks of treatment, as indicated by darker coloration in hybrid projection. "
(Slightly edited for readability!)
That almost sounds too good to be true. But apparently it isn't. Big reductions in wrinkle count after 4 and 8 weeks, and even more at 12 weeks, plus less roughness, better skin elasticity, and more moisture.
Great!
